photoblog image Christchurch Priory 5/7

Christchurch Priory 5/7

As the picture on Wednesday showed the chancel area in the church has a magnificent screen behind the main altar with a very fine wall painting of the Ascension of Christ in the arch above. Here is a close-up of that painting, It was painted by a German artist by the name of Hans Feibusch who was of Jewish heritage and lived and worked in Britain from 1933 until his death in 1998.

Those angels seem to have built-in crowns, Brian...I reckon that would make it a bit of a challenge to bull on a vest!
That's a really beautiful piece of art!
Brian Walbey: Lovely isn't it.

I have never seen angels thus depicted before, Brian
Brian Walbey: Not quite what we are used to seeing.
It looks like we're all noticing the unusual angels more than the Ascension itself, Brian. How fascinating.
Brian Walbey: I suppose because the angels are somewhat different to those we usually see depicted.

Another reworking of a sacred theme
Brian Walbey: Indeed Chris, there must be loads of different depictions of this.

Certainly an impressive work.
Brian Walbey: And it can be seen right from the other end of the church as my Tuesday picture shows.
It is a very impressive work Brian.
Brian Walbey: It is a very fine piece of art.

This is just amazing, Brian. What a fabulous painting this is. Eye catching.
Brian Walbey: If you look at my Tuesday posting you will see how it can be seen from the far end of the church.
The caricature here is odd.
Brian Walbey: Not quite what we are used to seeing as far as the depiction of angels is concerned.

There is much movement expressed in this painting. The Roman soldiers and the grave are not depicted.
Brian Walbey: This is the Ascension Philine so I'm not sure if the grave etc.should be on it, however it is a very impressive painting by a fellow countryman of yours who left Germany for England in 1933 because he was Jewish and presumably didn't like what was going on.
i'm glad that you gave us a closeup of this beautiful painting Brian... i noticed it yesterday....petersmile
Brian Walbey: Itc an be seen all the way down the church drom the west end.
Mmm - there seems to be something a bit Germanic in the style.
Brian Walbey: It was painted by a German artist who left Germany in 1933 as he was Jewish and nasty things were starting to happen I guess.

It makes more a fine centrepiece above the screen.
Brian Walbey: I think it is a magnificent work, it can be seen over the Rood Screen from the west end of the church as one walks in.
