DAYS GONE BY

A holiday with the family back in the 1980’s saw us visit the Norfolk Shire Horse Centre near West Runton where a large number of these lovely horses are looked after.  During the visit a horse was taken out to a nearby field and a demonstration of a horse at work was given and this picture shows the man controlling the horse as it harrows the field. I have toned the image which hopefully gives it a more dated look.

Draught Horses seem like a breed out of the past, Brian, and I think the world is a less pleasant place because of it.
Brian Walbey: Couldn't agree more Ray, there are still a lot about in the U.K.and are generally much treasured animals. My Grandad used to work a pair of these on a farm local to where he lived for many years, and my Dad used to go out with him sometimes, they were called Boxer and Punch, what great names.
Yes draught horses are like steam engines we all love them and what they stood for in past times.
Brian Walbey: Couldn't agree more Richard, my Grandad used to work on a farm at Melbourn and drive a pair of these as his job in the fields.
Nicely done, Brian - brings back the scenes of my childhood!
Brian Walbey: It certainly does Tom, my Grandad used to drive a pair of these on a Cambridgeshire farm as his job all those years ago.
Great capture Brian! Perfect in B&W.
Brian Walbey: Thanks very much Richard.

What a proper working horse, a good, old Ackergaul, and I love this old photo reminding me of childhood days! Lovely!
Brian Walbey: Thanks Philine, yes just like old times when my Granddad used to drive a pair of these lovely horses for a living.
excellent, nice mood too.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Rob.
Picture of a farmer I only know from my grandparents' stories...
Brian Walbey: yes indeed, likewise I only know about these things from my Granddad who used to do this one a farm for a living.

Just like in pre war days
Brian Walbey: Indeed Chris, my Granddad used to drive a pair of horses on a farm doing all this stuff when he was a young man apparently.

I like to see these horse ploughing demonstrations; the Great Dorset Steam fair has some of the display area turned over to such things; a fascinating glimpse into the days. Your aged treatment has worked well but those power lines need to go smile
Brian Walbey: Thanks Alan, you are right about the power lines of course. My Granddad used to drive a pair of horses, Boxer and Punch, on a local farm for much of his working life.
It is a great shot Brian and your treatment has worked to effect: I was a little confused, before I read your text, believing this to be an old photo smile
Brian Walbey: Thanks Martin. I deliberately aged it with the sepia tone but as Alan says, I should have taken the power lines out.
Now THAT is a horse!!!
Brian Walbey: Lovely animals aren't they.
