At Ambleside 1/2

Bridge House is possibly the most photographed building in the Lake District, and a popular subject for many artists including Turner. A tiny building, originally an apple store for nearby Ambleside Hall, was built over Stock Beck to escape land tax. Once five mills were driven by the power of Stock Beck and some may still be seen nearby. It is said that at some time a family with six children lived here in the two rooms. In 1926 it was purchased by a group of local people who passed it into the care of the National Trust, which 20 years later they turned into their first information and recruitment centre. You can now visit without charge to see the 2 sparsely furnished rooms.

Brilliantly eccentric...in the British tradition!
Brian Walbey: It must have been a strnage house to live in.
Nicely presented, Brian, we know it well, and its next to the 'Apple pie' cafe. Mmmmm, my mouths watering. smile
Brian Walbey: Thanks Frank. Elizabeth told me about that cafe before Mauren and I went to Ambleside but sadly time didn't allow us to go in although we did walk past it a few times.
I've been there! I loved seeing it then, and now through your eyes!
Brian Walbey: I know you've been there and the Apple Pie cafe nearly next door you told me about, sadly time didn't allow for us to go in there.

I stayed in Ambleside once and visited this unique structure
Brian Walbey: I think it is Amblesides most famous tourist attraction, it was so busy when we passed by we didn't wait to go in, it yook a long while to get these pictures as it was with nobody else in them.
A cosy spot for a family of eight
Brian Walbey: Three on the top floor, three on the groudn floor and two in a boat underneath smile
It is certainly unique.
Brian Walbey: It is probably Amblesides most famous tourist attraction.

This is a nice bridge house. I thought a publican had lived here to take some tax from the passers by. I would like to visit this house.
Brian Walbey: I'm sure you must have gone past this little house during your tours in the Lake District.
What a little gem it is Brian
Brian Walbey: Great isn't it.
i had to chuckle at the saving tax part, Brian. fine trio of shots.
Brian Walbey: A really good idea wasn't it.
Beautiful, it's the first house I see built over a small bridge
Brian Walbey: It was to avoid tax on the land under which it was built on.

An "icon" for the Lake District. Its situation means that just about everyone visiting ambleside passes it and so I'm not surprised that it features in so many photos. I never know about the land tax avoidance.
Brian Walbey: I didn't know about the tax avoidance thing either.
I'll have to take a look, next time I'm up there!
Brian Walbey: Worth a look although it was very busy when we were there, I had to wait ages to catch any photos without a queue outside.
