Southwell Minster 6/7

At the entrance to the South Aisle at Southwell is this very modern style carved ‘Madonna and Child’. This is a carving of Mary and Jesus as a child. It is called The Kelham Madonna and was designed by Alan Coleman and brought to the Minster in 1952. Southwell Minster is named after Mary, the mother of Jesus.

It is a fine statue, Brian.

The Jesus does not look like a happy lad.
Brian Walbey: Jesus looks rather austere doesn't he.

Brian Walbey: Lovely isn't it.

The modern interpretation of this classic scene is clearly evident with our greater awareness of the possible appearance and clothing at the time. I like the the presentation with the flowers alongside.
Brian Walbey: It is nicely set midway down the Minster at the start of one of the side corridors behind the Choir.
This is a superb statue Brian!

The style is very modern isn't it
Brian Walbey: Very much so.
I would have thought the Madonna stage would have changed to a piata with the age of the child.
Brian Walbey: You must be able to see into the future Mary, the Piata version is my posting tomorrow.
That's a very adult looking child!
Brian Walbey: Certainly a few years old Tom.

Jesus obviously still likes to be carried, Brian
Brian Walbey: In theory a child of that size would be walking of course.
