Darley Moor Classic Races - Part 1 1/6

STILL TIME TO TURN BACK

In August last year my next door neighbour and I went to a classic motorcycle race meeting at the small Darley Moor circuit just outside Ashbourne, Derbyshire. I’m posting a selection of action and other shots in this two part series, the whole being something quite different to my normal fare on SC.so I hope you enjoy it, although I will understand if the ladies decide it isn’t to their taste.

This really is the moment when competitors still have a chance to ‘turn back’ as they stand in the pre-race paddock prior to moving out to the starting grid. There is some lovely old machinery here including 117, John Fawcett with a Seeley Matchless, 68, Keith Riley with a BSA, 4, Ian Henshaw, Royal Enfield, 155, Kevin Thurston, Velocette and 33, Mike Powell, Seeley Matchless.

Motorcycles are not my taste but this is very nicely portrayed. I would not want to ride one but shooting is another story!
Brian Walbey: I've never ridden a racing bike but had a few smaller road bikes in my younger days, and have been racing enthusiast since 1961.
I agree with Beth... your pyramid layout makes it interesting! My sister has a Ninja... and zips to and from work in Colorado (when it's not snowing!).

Tes photos sont très belles mais je n'aime pas le bruit que font les motos.
Brian Walbey: If you are a race enthusiast like me Martine then the noise is all part of it.

Brian Walbey: A real mix of different types under the streamlinings.

I'll give it a go, Brian - at least I can admire the quality of the photography!
Brian Walbey: Thanks Lisl, hopefully you won't be disappointed.
Some fine old machines. I bet you had a great time!
Brian Walbey: We had a great day out Bill, just like the old days before most racing classes were based on hotted up road bikes, and I took a lot of pictures.
Speed, danger. Excitement and noise...very Vortistic Brian.
Brian Walbey: What more could one ask for Chad, since attending my first meeting in 1961 I have been hooked on motorcycle racing, any sport with a ball just can't compare as far as I'm concerned.
These fabulous machines take me decades back Brian! I am looking forward to you coming week.
Brian Walbey: After our exchange of comments I was hoping you might say something like that Richard. I'm posting till Saturday then a weeks break and the rest in two weeks time so it doesn't get too boring for those not particularly interested.
A classic line up, a day to enjoy
Brian Walbey: It was a great day out Martin, just like going to a race meeting back in the 60's and 70's.

At all races, there are the girl groupies. Whether it is the bikes or bums they are after, I wouldn't know. One of the South African ex-SC'ers by the handle of "pitwallantix" is among other, into bike racing http://pitwallantix.shutterchance.com/image/2007/11/26/scullynator/

I like your collage of bikes.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Louis, the only lady I had chasing me at race meetings was my wife smile There used to be another South African SC'er who stopped posting back in 2009, named Neil Tandy, he posted a lot of bike shots and way back when i remember seeing his dad racing in the U.K.before they moved to SA. This was his last but one post http://neiljt.shutterchance.com/image/2009/10/26/on-the-gas/
I am glad you gave me an out because I am a woman.
Brian Walbey: That's o.k. Mary, back to something else next Monday and then I'm finishing the bikes off in tow weeks time.
A nice collection, Brian, many years ago a friend of mine raced in a 'classic' race at Brands hatch, he told me a very funny story...I'll tell you next time I see you.
Brian Walbey: I look forward to hearing that Frank, I used to go to Brands Hatch quite a lot and even commentated there a couple of times in the late 70's.

I can imagine the noise of it all
Brian Walbey: For an enthusiast the noise is all part of it Anne.
it's a nice collection of motor bikes Brian... i am looking forward to the series....peterwink
Brian Walbey: Yes a real variety Peter, I'm glad you are looking forward to the series. I'm posting till Saturday then a weeks break and the rest in two weeks time so it doesn't get too boring for those not particularly interested.
