Bakewell Museum 6/7

One of the rooms at the Old House Museum in Bakewell is set up as a schoolroom so I’m presuming that part of it was used for that purpose many years ago. The chalkboards, sloping desk and school bell are not unlike those from my parents time, and I remember using chalk boards like that. I wonder if the teacher was as much of a tyrant as she appears to have been portrayed.

The school furniture at my Primary School was not so different from this, Brian.

Life as it used to be - strict!
Brian Walbey: I had a teacher in infant school upon who this mannequin could be modelled, one didn't mess about in her class!
Wonderful image Brian. It takes me back to my youth in Madagascar!
Brian Walbey: It seems several of us recall similar school days Richard.
I remember the desks like this but we did have paper!
Brian Walbey: WE had paper after a while, and pens with inkwells that were refilled once a week.
The women you have show look very manly. To me she just looks tired.

Probably needed to be to keep the little devils in order smile
Brian Walbey: I had a teacher who looked very similar to this, nobody messed about in Miss Onions class!

From a time when we knew to respect our teachers. Even in my time, we used to live in fear of some of them. I can just imagine this lady hurling the bell at some hapless child smile
Brian Walbey: Right through my schooling from 1948 to 1960 we were all 'afraid' of our teachers, they were respected for their position etc.but these days I suspect a lot of kids just couldn't give a damn!
