Solent Snapshots 1/7

I took this picture (the best I’d taken at that time with my new Lumix TZ60 I felt) of The Spinnaker Tower at Portsmouth as we left on the ferry to cross the Solent to the Isle of Wight. Very kindly the harbour pilot came past at the same time and I was able to snap him in what I think is just the right position. I've had a 16" x 12" print done of this which I will enter in a competition at my club at some time, and tomorrow I am entering a projected version in another competition, hopefully it will be considered as a bit more than a 'record' shot by the judges.

It looks pretty darn good to me, Brian...if I was a judge you would be vying for the $1m First Prize.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Ray, a $!m would come in handy at the moment, we've just had new windows and doors fitted to the front of our house.
Good luck, Brian, looks good to me.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Frank.
A wonderful picture Brian! I cross my fingers.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Richard.

I think you will do very well with this one, Brian. Is this your first Lumix?
Brian Walbey: Thanks Lisl. The judge tomorrow evening is very much a natural history photographer, he does some magnificent work, but all the entries will cover a range of subjects so we shall see. This is my first Lumix and I am very pleased with it, indeed two of my fellow club members have also been out and bought the later TZ70 to augment their DSLR equipment.
Just go for broke, Brian. You often win the competitions you enter. Good for you!
Brian Walbey: The judge is a very accomplished natural history photogrpaher but the competition subject matter is completely open so we shall find out what else he likes to see.

There must be no doubt that the judges will look upon this with favour Brian, even the clouds are in the right place
Brian Walbey: I hope so Chris. The judge is a very accomplished natural history photogrpaher but the competition subject matter is completely open so we shall find out what else he likes to see.
An "iconic" image of Portsmouth. The judges will give it a highly commended at least
Brian Walbey: This was one of the things I was looking forward to seeing on that holiday and everything was right for this picture. The judge is a very accomplished natural history photographer but the competition subject matter is completely open so we shall find out what else he likes to see.
It is certainly compositionally perfect. The nice colour from the pilot is perfect.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Mary. This was one of the things I was looking forward to seeing on that holiday and everything was right for this picture.

Yes, judges can be finicky at times. Great shot and the portrait style is great as well - in my mind, that is what is setting it apart from a record shot. Tell the judges, I said so smile
Brian Walbey: Thanks Louis. I have got a shot coming up on Friday in a landscape format including the tower, I will be interested to hear what you think about that one.

You're braver that I am; I don't have the heart to enter any serious competitions. I did try for the BBC Counttyside calendar one year but that was judged by idiots, too! This is a fine shot, though; full of colur and action. The pilot's boat was perfectly times.

I've got an issue with my TZ60 in that half the lens cover blades don't close when the camer is off. Luckily it is still in guarantee.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Alan. I also sent some shots to Countryfile one year but sadly the quality of the judges leaves a bit to be desired. Hope you get a replacement for your TZ60 sorted out quickly and easily.
Fine shot, Brian - deserves at least an hon. mention!
Brian Walbey: Thanks Tom, I will find out this evening.
