From My 1970's Darkroom (1 of a few)

MARTIN POWELL, HONDA

A regular competitor in the Manx Grand Prix races for amateurs in the Isle Of Man during the 1960’s and 1970’s Martin Powell hurries his Honda racer through the very fast bend at Hillberry during the 1974 Senior (500cc.) Manx Grand Prix where he finished in 16th.position.  There is much more to the Isle of Man than motorcycle races, this abosolutely brilliant 3 minute  video gives you a good idea what the island is like from above, please try and find time to watch it. We have been almost everywhere on the video during our many visits to the island, 14 for me over the years, trouble is when I watch this I want to go again, one day perhaps.

I have always dreamt to be at a Manx Grand Prix race Brian!
A pity the video doesn't work...
Brian Walbey: I went to the Man Grand Prix several times, firstly with a friend who later competed in the races himself, and then with Maureen. During that period I was quite heavily involved in motorcycle sport and had quite a few friends and acquaintances who took part in these races for the amateur riders. Sorry about the video, perhaps it isn't set up to be watched abroad.

Never been to the IOM Brian, one day perhaps..
Brian Walbey: The IOM.is a lovely place to go Chris, loads of walking for people like you and Lisl, and lots to see all over the place, plus of course the Steam Railway, two tramways and the horse trams on the Douglas promenade.
I am like Tiff, never been there Brian.
Brian Walbey: The IOM.is a lovely place to go Chad, loads of walking and lots to see all over the place, plus of course the Steam Railway, two tramways and the horse trams on the Douglas promenade.

About the only things I know about Isle of Man is that it has great road races for motorcycles, Brian.

Nick has always wanted to go there being into the racing there. Loved the video and maybe one day
Brian Walbey: It is a lovely place to go Janet, the racing of course is very exciting but we have also been there at other times because it is such a nice place to go.

There's something on TV tonight I think about this year's Manx TT. I was on the island in 1969 and have ridden around the TT circuit; slower than the racers, though!
Brian Walbey: There are reports on the TT races on ITV 4 in the evenings right up to Sunday week. The outright lap record is 17m-6.682s. (132.298mph.average) for 37.73 miles and in some places the top riders are well above 200 mph., it makes one think!
The video worked for me and was great though I had seen it before. I had never heard of the race but am interested in the Isle of Man. My daughter in law's grandparents live there. Actually the grandmother passed away in the last year.
