Breedon On The Hill Church (5/7)

Following on from yesterday and my closer look at the windows in St.Mary and St.Hardulph’s church I moved the camera down to take this shot of the altar with some really old stonework behind it and a very nice altar rail in the foreground.

This place seems to get a lot of loving attention, Brian.
Brian Walbey: Indeed it does Ray, there are a lot of Anglo-Saxon carvings still in situ.
A vey well looked after place Brian! Beautiful capture.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Richard, there is a lot of history and it is a popular church to visit as well as worship.

Those carvings in the wall could be Saxon from the look of them
Brian Walbey: They probably are Chris, there are a lot of carvings preserved in the church from that period.
i noticed the scroll work in the line of stones yesterday Brian... the rest of the wall has such a variety of different layers of stonework....petersmile
Brian Walbey: There's work of all ages in that wall, the scroll might well be Anglo-Saxon, there is a lot of that preserved in the church.
I love the curly cues in the stonework, Brian. I don't often see that!
Brian Walbey: That work is almost certainly Anglo-Saxon there being lots of stonework from that age still preserved in the church.
Those carvings do look very old Brian. I expect Chris is right about them being Saxon. He seems to know about these things
Brian Walbey: Almost certainly from that period, the church has lots of carved stone from that era.

3x Sanctus - a fine, proper, well cared for church, indeed! Yes, wonderful stone carvings - Chris might be right!
Brian Walbey: You would enjoy a visit to this church Philine, there is so much really old stone work including this which might well be Anglo-Saxon like other stones around the building.

That wonderful stonework is the first thing that caught my eye - it is delightful.
Brian Walbey: And very old as well Alan, probably Anglo-Saxon.
