A Birmingham Day Out 13/21

BIRMINGHAM NEW LIBRARY

The new library in Centenary Square, Birmingham opened on 3rd.September, 2003 and is a most unusual looking building. My reflection image of 8th.June included part of it for you to see but this is more or less the whole building from the front. If you look closely at the left hand end of the gold/brown level you will see people leaning over the wall from the viewing area at that level. There are also viewing areas at the top of both of the darker sections, we just went as far as the lower section on our visit.

With a whisp of smoke out of the round bit on top, Brian, you could pretend it was an ocean liner.
Brian Walbey: I thought that myself actually Ray.
Unusual indeed!! Your photo captures it well though!
Brian Walbey: I suspect one either loves or hates it to be honest, me, I'm sitting on the fence on that one.

Well it's DIFFERENT Brian! I really don't know whether I like it or not..

Not to my taste but quite original Brian! Fine capture.

Looks like someone doodled it,then built it by mistake....
Brian Walbey: I won't argue with that Frank, and inside there is more empty space than full, most weird.
Built at a cost of something in the order of £190 million. Costing over three times as much as the Hive in Worcester it has also managed to be even more hideous from the outside. I believe the inside is much better and as a library it is home to over one million books
It was officially opened in 2013 by Malala Yousafzai, the teenager shot in the head in Pakistan by the Taliban for championing women's rights.

Your picture is excellent Brian and actually lends some visual appeal to the building
Brian Walbey: Thanks Bill, and for the information. I can't make up my mind about the look of the building, it is certainly quite photogenic. Strangely inside it seems to have loads of empty space and not very much in it, the whole centre part is a series of escalators taking one up and down between the floors.

Very striking! Your image has a feeling of an artist's impression of the scene. I wonder what the workers in the building to the right make of it?
Brian Walbey: It is certainly very unusual in concept, just like the Selfridges building in the centre of the city.
