RIEVAULX ABBEY

Taken during our very first holiday in the North Yorkshire Moors Area in June, 1976, how do I know, well Maureen was 7 months pregnant with our son at that time. This was taken on monochrome film and processed in my own darkroom, the scan being from a print. I do remember it wasn’t the best of days weather wise, hence it is a bit ‘flat’. Rievaulx Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey in Rievaulx, near Helmsley, North Yorkshire. Headed by the Abbot of Rievaulx, it was one of the wealthiest abbeys in England until it was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1538. Its ruins are a tourist attraction, owned and maintained by English Heritage, and I believe our dear friend Philine made a visit here last year.

Very impressive, Brian.

How is Maureen's hip progressing?
Brian Walbey: Thanks Ray, what a shame it is in ruins. Maureen is doing well, she seems to improve in stages, she drives now but has only been out of town a few times, her left (clutch) leg is still not quite a manoeuvrable as it really should be. She sees the consultant in late May re that hip and having the other one done.

Interesting Brian: this was just before the start of that glorious summer, as I recall.
Brian Walbey: Indeed it was Chris and she carried our Chris right through till 31st.August, she was exhausted at times with all the heat.

Who in their right mind would dissolve such a magnificent abbey, Brian??? Thank god it's been left as a tourist attraction! I'm so glad you've been resurrecting these past images for us.
Brian Walbey: I often think Henry VIII has a lot to answer for, so many beautiful places like this, and churches were desecrated in his name, the destruction of the nations heritage as far as I'm concerned. I have some more scans to come and have been looking through my many slides for some more to do.

You did a good job avoiding converging verticals here Brian.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Mike. It wasn't too bad on the original and I was able to sort the slight slope in ShiftN and CS3.

Yes, I have been there last summer on a sunny, warm day - one of my most beautiful impressions - a gorgous Abbey, indeed, and I like your image very much, b&w can often enhance the structure of a building, but the warm colour of the stone and the greenage around are also wonderful.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Philine, I thought you did go there last tear. This was way back in 1976 when we went but I do remember all those colours you mention, but I felt B.& W.suited this.

This is very artsy to me. Your son must be almost exactly one year older than my son.
Brian Walbey: I hope that means you like it Mary. Our Chris was born on 31st.August, 1976, the very last day of the school year over here, so he was always the youngest in class. It seems unbelievable that he will be 38 this year.

Old Henry VIII has a lot to answer for. Yorkshire has some impressive ruins like this; Fountains Abbey is a favourite for me.

I remember the summer of 1976... far too hot and humid for me! I wonder if Maureen found it uncomfortable?

We went to Fountains Abbey during our Yorkshire break last year, I still have pictures to post. Great capture Brian! nicely captured!
Brian Walbey: Thanks very much Ronke.

I remember this from years ago - what a fantastic ruin, which will never lose its beauty
Brian Walbey: It is a lovely ruin in a lovely place, but what a shame it is a ruin at all.
What a superb capture Brian! Well done.
Brian Walbey: Thanks very much Richard.
It's a photogenic spot - I know it well.
Brian Walbey: Yes all of these ruined abbeys and cathedrals seem to be in very photogenic places Tom.

Rievaulx was like this when I last went there.
Brian Walbey: And I guess it always will be now Richard, how sad.
Some very good shapes in this
Brian Walbey: It's a photographers delight John.
Beautiful details in b&w.
Brian Walbey: Thanks very much Hollie.
I like this 1976 image.
Brian Walbey: Thanks very much Jacquelyn.
