Ashby Show - Miscellaneous 3/7

Taken at the annual Ashby Show, near Ashby-de-la-Zouch in July. There were, as always with such events, a display by the local Huntsmen and their dogs, but at Ashby there was also a display by a pack of Foot Hounds and their handlers, something I’d not seen before.

Very English - wonderful traditions - but no fox hunting!
Brian Walbey: Indeed very English Philine, I'm a bit open minded about Fox hunting, they are a real pest to farmers and their animals, and are becoming a real nuisance now they are moving into urban areas.
Great shots of working dogs
Brian Walbey: Thanks Shane.

Excellent country stuff Brian
Brian Walbey: Indeed Chris, you and I will understand this, unlike our metropolitan elite who know little of such things.
Dog hunt, or horse ride?
Brian Walbey: Neither for me Chantal, except as a photographer.

We only see this sort of things in movies down here, good photos Brian
Brian Walbey: I guess you do vintage, but surely there must be some sort of hunting in Australia.

Dare I say yet again..."This is so English, Brian!" I love it. smile
Brian Walbey: Yes you dare say it again Ginnie, in fact I would have been disappointed if you hadn't smile and you are so correct.
Foot hounds are not unusual in the Lakes, Brian, due to the terrain I would think. Two nice shots.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Frank. I must admit to not having heard of mounted hunters very much outside what is called the Shire Counties in the south of the country.
A fine couple of shots Brian; I've not heard of Foot Hounds either smile
Brian Walbey: I'd heard of Foot Hounds but never seen them before, Frank suggests they are used in places like the Lake District where it is difficult to take horses in groups I presume.

Not heard of Foot Hounds either. Probably a cheaper option that trying to run some horses, too. Looks to be good weather for the show.

No mistaking the country where these shots were taken, Brian. Quite a few of the dogs appear to be grinning; they must really like what they do.
Brian Walbey: No a very English pasttime Beverly, and not the most popular of ones among some of the population.
A classy sport!
Brian Walbey: It's always reckoned that one has to be well off to hunt but I guess the foot hounds people don't have the cost of running a horse.

They used to hunt otters on foot.
Brian Walbey: Yes I believe they did Richard, that's even worse than hunting Foxes IMHO.
A very nice presentation Brian!
Brian Walbey: Thanks Richard.

It could only be England Brian.
Brian Walbey: Ginnie said exactly the same Chad.

pretty dogs are they groomed like show dogs or strictly hunters
Brian Walbey: They are trained to be hunting dogs as far as I know and when they get too old I believe they are not suitable for house pets, it is a business keeping hounds rather than a hobby.
Huntsmen and their dogs, always a great spectacle Brian
Brian Walbey: Yes we have the Quorn Hunt not far from us but I've only ever seen them once, and that was by accident.
Two fabulous action shots Brian... it brings back images that was a very impressive sport....petersmile
Brian Walbey: Thanks Peter, you probably are aware that hunting as a sport is a very difficult subject in the U.K., firstly because of the "cruelty" to the Foxes and secondly one has to be pretty well off to keep horses to ride with the hounds.
