Ashby Show - People 6/7

Taken at the annual Ashby Show, near Ashby-de-la-Zouch in July. The Brits among us will be very familiar with the Women’s Institute, indeed I am because Maureen has been a member of our local branch for over 20 years, and these two ladies were busy chatting away to each other by the W.I.display. The W.I.had, of course, their usual refreshments area elsewhere on the showground although this time we didn’t take advantage of their hospitality.

I am delighted to hear you didn't take advantage of these gals, Brian...your restraint is commendable.
Brian Walbey: When the W.I.do refreshments at these sort of events it is a pretty big thing involving quite a lot of the local members, and the food is usually very good.
I like to see women supporting each other in whatever capacity. Seems important when competition is part of our culture
Brian Walbey: The W.I.is probably the biggest women's organisation in the U.K.and as well as all the local groups and their activities, it acts on a national basis lobbying parliament on all sorts of matters concerning how the country works.

A nice picture of two ladies
Brian Walbey: Indeed Chris, the epitome of W.I.ladies, as is my Maureen.
The W.I. is indeed infamous, Brian, ( have I got that right?)
Brian Walbey: Famous and infamous Frank, especially a few years back when they booed Tony Blair at their annual conference in Blackpool when he started to get political in his speech, they are a non-political organisation and didn't like it. Maureen was at that occasion but said she didn't boo, although she wanted too, far too refined.

All I know is that we buy regular supplies of good quality chunky marmalade from their stalls
Brian Walbey: They might be called the 'Jam and Jerusalem' lot by the media, which is far from true and upsetting to some of the ladies, but on the whole their cakes, jams and marmalades that I've tasted from round my way are excellent.
A very nice capture of these ladies Brian!
Brian Walbey: Indeed Richard, the epitome of W.I.ladies, as is my Maureen.
There is more to the WI than Jam and Jerusalem
Brian Walbey: Indeed there is Bill as Tony Blair found to his cost when he tried to give them a political speech one year at the national AGM in Blackpool and he was booed. Maureen was there for that but said she didn't boo, I'm quite surprised, she has never been able to stand the man, anymore than I can.
WI - Ladies often of certain age with very strong views, not to be trifled with. I know this first hand as I too am married to one.
Brian Walbey: Tony Blair found that out to his cost when he tried to give them a political speech one year at the national AGM in Blackpool and he was booed. Maureen was there for that but said she didn't boo, I'm quite surprised, she has never been able to stand the man, anymore than I can.
