A Look At Lakeland (The Final Week)

CROSTHWAITE CHURCH, KESWICK

A few weeks ago I featured the parish church in the centre of Keswick but there is also another large parish church on the outskirts of the town at Rosthwaite. This Church is dedicated to St.Kentigern, known as St.Mungo in Scotland, where he is the patron saint of St.Mungo's Cathedral in Glasgow. It was built on an ancient site in its present form probably in 1553 at the beginning of the reign of Mary I (it incorporates 14th-century arches). Gilbert Scott restored the church in 1844; this was part of the memorial to the poet Robert Southey who is buried in the churchyard.

They are all framed very well and you created a great montage here Brian... i like the two tombstones in the bottom left corner... they look like praying hands....petersmile
Brian Walbey: Thanks Peter. I think some of the tombstones have been there a very long time.
Very nice collage - it shows off the place nicely. Looks quite regal, actually!
Brian Walbey: Thanks Elizabeth. I was very impressed with this church, mind you we sat outside in the car for about 20 minutes while a humongous rain storm passed over us, typical lake District!

Just look at the size of it from outside. Very interesting Brian
Brian Walbey: It is a big church Chris which I suspect has had quite a bit added to it over the years.

You know me, Brian...I'd want to see it all, inside and out.
Brian Walbey: I made sure I did that Ginnie. You might be interested in my latest video I have tagged to Fridays posting as you like churches.
A fine looking church. I imagine the pews were part of the restoration
Brian Walbey: It is a fine church Bill, and yes, the pews look quite new compared with some of the main fabric of the church.

It's long and low Brian.
Brian Walbey: Yes I thought it rather an unusual shape Chad.
different..
Brian Walbey: I prefer presenting churches like this, they are not to everybodies taste so they get to se it all in one go.
I like your presentation, Brian smile
Brian Walbey: Thanks Martin.
This place is on my "next to visit" list..great Collage
Brian Walbey: Thanks very much, I hope you make that visit and enjoy it as much as I did.

I like collages because they can give an overview, for example of this large church full of many lovely details! A fine, simple cross stands on the altar. The saint is totally unknown to me, he is told to have becomme 185 years old! Wishable? No!
Brian Walbey: Thanks Philine. I liked the cross on the altar also, and had also never heard of this saint. On Friday there will be a link to my video of all six churches featured in this series you might enjoy.
Lovely photos and an interesting history, Brian. I always shudder when I see the words "restored" in connection with Victorians and churches. It normally means ruined in relation to antiquities.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Pauline. I know what you mean about restored in Victorian terms, they seemed to like taking away of the really old things and replacing them with more austere stuff instead!

Very impressive inside. I would have never guessed it from the outside. That is very impressive. I love the architecture of the church.
These are some great shots.
Brian Walbey: Yes for a rather strange shaped church it is really quite nice inside.
You got it all very well covered Brian. A fine collage as usual
Brian Walbey: Thanks Janet, we just had to sit in the car in belting rain for about 20 minutes before I could even venture in to the churchyard, typical Lake District!
Wonderful presentation of this beautiful church Brian!
Brian Walbey: Thanks Richard, it is rather a nice church isn't it.

It looks a grand Church, Brian - I didn't know that Southey was buried here
Brian Walbey: It is quite a fine church, better than the outside suggests.
Good assembly, Brian.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Tom.

Lovely collage
Brian Walbey: Thanks Aussie.
A fine old church Brian
Brian Walbey: It is quite a fine church, better than the outside suggests.
nice collection of images. i like the organ pipes seen in the top right. they seem much lower down in here
Brian Walbey: Thanks Ayush. It has quite a low ceiling at that point in the church so I guess they couldn't get the organ pipes any higher.
Your collages are always interesting and so well put together, Brian, and this one is no exception.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Beverly. On Friday I have a link to my YouTube video with this and the other churches in this series included.
