A Look At Lakeland (The Final Week)

KESWICK WAR MEMORIAL

This is the final week of this extended look at our visit to the Lake District in May and of course it is also Armistice Day. This is the war memorial in Keswick, placed in the intersection of several major roads in the town next to a large public park, and you’ll notice the beautiful mountain background of the Skiddaw range, truly quite a fine setting for this memorial.  You can watch my short video in honour of those we remember this day below. Alan Rolfe had a different view of this memorial here yesterday.

great shot here. the memorial, the buildings and the trees are all well shown off, with the mountains forming a pleasant backdrop
Brian Walbey: Nice setting for the memorial isn't it.
Wonderful perspective on the memorial, Brian. I enjoyed your video very much.
Brian Walbey: Thanks very much Elizabeth.
I saw Alan's image of this memorial yesterday Brian... i like them both...
your video is a beautiful tribute to let us reflect on the sacrifices of people in all armed conflicts.

Armistice Day, Remembrance Day, Veteran's Day. Whatever we call it, LEST WE FORGET. Thank you for remembering and taking the time to make your video.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Ginnie, I have an uncle I never knew who lost his life in Burma, I do think of him, he is buried in Bangladesh and we have a photo of his grave.

a very moving video -Lest we forget - also my grandfather died in 1918 as a member (interpreter, reverend, soldier) of the Asia Corps in Aleppo/Syria and he found a grave in the desert there. My mother cannot remember her father.
Brian Walbey: Firstly thanks for watching my video, no doubt you are familiar with Elgar's Nimrod from the Enigma Variations, it is always played at the London Cenotaph celebration on Remembrance Sunday. I have managed to find out a bit about the Asia Corps and Aleppo you refer to, that is all new knowledge to me. Finally, bearing in mind how history unfolded in both World Wars, we were wondering if you have any sort of remembrance ceremonies each year, like us your nation lost many thousands of ordinary young men in the conflicts.
This is nice...
Brian Walbey: Thanks very much.

I just love towns that are surrounded by overshadowing hills Brian.
Brian Walbey: Yes Keswick is certainly set in a fine spot.
the grand finale
Brian Walbey: I hope that's how it will be looked at Chantal.
Looking fine in this lovely setting Brian
Brian Walbey: Thanks Janet.
What a great back drop to this memorial
Brian Walbey: Isn't it just Martin.
This is a great shot of the memorial and mountains!
Brian Walbey: Thanks Martin.
Great video. We'll never forget them

And God saves us from emerging barbarian everywhere in the world
Brian Walbey: Thanks very much, I see quite a few people have watched my video on YouTube already.

We have many sorts of remembrance ceremonies each year as I listed up on my blog - the victims of the holocaust are in particular commemorated, in anniveraries also the fallen soldiers of the two wars or in Iraque or the dead during the bombing of the many towns in WWII. We don't celebrate heros of soldiers like in other countries.
A lovely memorial, Brian. It's so nice that so many people put on memorials today.
Brian Walbey: Yes there is usually quite a collection of such posts on 11th.November each year.

This is indeed a very nice setting for a memorial. In the middle of the town.
The flowers are beautiful.
I like Alan's picture too.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Astrid.
A nice traditional place.
Brian Walbey: Indeed it is John.

Very appropriate Brian - sorry to see the end of our sojourn in the Lakes.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Mike, I think after 11 weeks people will have seen enough of my pictures from the Lakes.
It's vaguely familiar from a visit many years ago, round about 1958 in fact smile
