St.Giles Church - Calke Abbey 5/7

Despite its simplicity there are some nice little cameos to be seen and photographed in the church, including this small cushion with what I assume is the Bible on it, This is all that is on the simple table being used as the altar and the cross, as we saw on Wednesday, stands on the sill of the window behind.

Excellent detail work, Brian.

I especially love the mouldy book...
Brian Walbey: Thanks Ray. Let's say the booked is marked with the passing of history and time.
the bible reminds me of my design handbook since my undergraduate days. i like the wood carvings
Brian Walbey: The carvings are very nice aren't they.
Very nice Brian!
Brian Walbey: Thanks Elizabeth.

Maybe just the Psalms and Proverbs, Brian? A Bible would have to be much thicker! But what a sweet still-life.
Brian Walbey: Yes I don't think it is a Bible Ginnie, but the small collection of items against the small carving really attracted me. This is more of an Astrid type shot isn't it.

The details are what often make a church visit memorable Brian
Brian Walbey: Yes indeed Chris, I try tot find bits and pieces to take.
A nice detail Brian. Looks like a good solid bit of oak as well
Brian Walbey: Yes a fine bit of timber and a nice little carving.
nice still life it makes
Brian Walbey: Thanks Chantal.

Good composition Brian; I do like the wood - old oak? smile
Brian Walbey: Thanks Martin, it might be Oak, there are a lot of Oak trees on the estate.
It could be a bible but it looks more like a photograph album or a visitors book.
The cushion may be elderly, the bible may be old with wafer-thin pages and small print, its certainly well used, but that panel at the back, now that looks and "feels" really old.

PS I don't think the book is "mouldy", I think the pages edges are gold and the light is reflecting on it.
Brian Walbey: I suspect it isn't the whole Bible Sheila, perhaps just the New Testament as Ginnie suggests.
Well-chosen little image, Brian.
Brian Walbey: Thanks very much Tom.
Very nicely captured Brian. The details are superb!
Brian Walbey: Thanks very much Richard.

Some very old oak carving here; and that tassle looks quite ancient, too
Brian Walbey: Yes it does look quite old doesn't it.
Still life in the church.
Brian Walbey: Yes indeed John, more over the weekend.

The book looks a bit thin to be the Bible. That carving looks very old; I like to see skill displayed in this way.
Brian Walbey: Yes I don't think it is a Bible Alan, but I agree with you about the artistic skill, sometimes it is worth going past the overall view.
