A Stroll At Calke Abbey #3

Close to the church, which you will see tomorrow, are the enormous walled gardens created in 1773 and consisting of a kitchen garden which was grassed over in the 1960's and a flower and physic garden. The small flower garden is carefully maintained and is a peaceful and sheltered place to relax.

The highlight of the walled garden, which is magnificent in its own right, is this very well preserved Auricula Theatre which, as you can see, is full of potted plants, making this corner of the garden so very bright and colourful.

O to have a garden like that
Brian Walbey: Wait till I show you the major part of the garden later in the year vintage, it is lovely during all the seasons.
Lovely! It's a wonder the potted plants in the higher tiers get enough light!
Brian Walbey: I guess as the sun moves round all the plants get their fair share Elizabeth.
I love walled gardens and the display of pots is, indeed, very colourful Brian
Brian Walbey: This is a fine garden Bill, I am going to show the main part during the Winter to cheer us all up.

I don't think I've ever seen such a theatre with potted plants like that, Brian. I bet it's spectacular when it catches the full sun.
Brian Walbey: Yes it is a very well known theatre, Google it and you will see what I mean. I am going to show the main garden during the Winter to cheer us all up.
A beautiful picture Brian, it calms me looking at it.
Brian Walbey: The whole garden is a calming one Frances, as long as there are no children about of course!
Looks a fine place to wander around Brian.
Brian Walbey: It is Les, during the Winter I will show more of the garden to cheer us all up.

Somebody likes their pots! A very colourful display.
Brian Walbey: I reckon Maureen has got more pots than that Mike, they are everywhere! This is a very popular corner of the garden when they are all in bloom.

This is lovely, Brian. I always enjoy seeing walled garden as there is usually something of interest there and this is no exception. I've never heard of an Auricula Theatre before.
Brian Walbey: I am going to show more of the garden during the Winter to cheer us up Alan. I hadn't heard of one of these before going to Calke either.
