Whitby 'Choccie Box' Style 8/14

Another shot taken down by the harbour, with St.Mary's church on the cliff top, and the usual pack of harbourside Gulls pestering those trying to eat their chips in comfort.  You will note my "supermodel" is taking a rest at the front end of the seat before we tackle the steep steps up to our hotel on the clifftop behind me.

Large fossils have been found in the area including entire skeletons of pterodactyls. Whitby is known for its well-preserved ammonite fossils, which can be found on the seashore or purchased from stalls or shops in the town.  Three green ammonites are featured on the coat of arms of the Whitby Town Council.  These ammonites are shown with a head carved on, as "snake stones", which were sold as religious souvenirs in memory of Saint Hilda of Whitby.

A place I have managed some decent gull pictures Brian, but the cliff paths did get to me the last time I was there.
Brian Walbey: Yes we found the climb up to our hotel on the West Cliff was a bit hard going Les.

The church looks like it could perform service as a castle in times of strife, Brian.
Brian Walbey: The basic part of the church dates from the 1100's Ray although it has been altered a lot since then. Most of the inside is Victorian and I may do a short series later this year because it has a most unusual interior.

A delightful place to take your supermodel to, I hope you two had some ice cream after this picture was taken.
A wonderful view.
Love the two yellow canoes.
Brian Walbey: We really loved Whitby Astrid, but we didn't have an ice cream at that point, dinner in our hotel was fast approaching. I like how you notice things, I never saw those boats before you mentioned them.

I've never seen Whitby in better light Brian
Brian Walbey: Yes we were lucky that day Chris, it was the afternoon before the evening I took the shots I showed last week.

I love when you include your "supermodel" in your Choccie Boxes, Brian. smile
Brian Walbey: And I love it when she is there with me Ginnie, all being well we will be there on the 4th.September to say hello again.
There are an awful lot of steps in Whitby!
Brian Walbey: Tell me about it Bill. WE didn't do the famous ones but behind us are a lot of steps up to our hotel.
A nice one Brian. I just love the castle on the hill.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Francis. The "castle" is actually St. Mary's church and Bram Stoker wrote a scene in his Dracula novel based in this church.

Great huddle of little houses beneath the impressive castle,
Brian Walbey: Thanks Chad. The castle is the church Bram Stoker included in his Dracula novel.
it looks like a great little town to visit
Brian Walbey: It is lovely Chantal.
Mentioning the fossils has done it for me. I want to go there now.
Brian Walbey: Not only does Whitby have fossils but also some local black stone used for jewellery called Jet which can see a bit of here > http://www.whitbyjetstore.com/
Chad can't recognize a church from a castle and also is to bl**dy lazy to read your blurb.

Fine image Brian
Brian Walbey: Thanks Richard, sadly Chad wasn't the only one who didn't read my blurb.
I must go to Whitby again and try for a fine day after the holiday season. Good series.
Brian Walbey: Thanks John, make it a couple of days if I were you.
I hope your "supermodel" gets the appropriate rate, Brian. LOL

Seagulls do have enromous pester power - but I do still like them.
Brian Walbey: She got a "freebie" holiday Sheila, in return for doing the driving smile

It would be great to go on a fossil hunt. Whitby sure is a lovely place smile
Brian Walbey: I suspect most of the easy to find fossils were found long ago Linda, but still a nice place to go.

Those seagulls are great opportunists! In some place it's illegal to feed them because they can be blasted nuisance. Those steps do like a bit of trial from here. Probably worse still when you were there.
Brian Walbey: WE didn't attempt those steps Alan, they are the famous ones, I've had one heart attack, I don't want another!!

Just noticed that one of the seagulls has two large yellow weights hanging from it! smile
Brian Walbey: Yes and so did Astrid, but I didn't, I was probably half asleep by that time of day.

Chip alert ;o) I see Yorkshire seagulls are as interested in easy pickings as their southern cousins!
Brian Walbey: I think they are the same everywhere Mike, I can certainly vouch for the ones in Llandudno going by a similar experience there a few years back.
Just such a charming place! So glad you had your supermodel with you!
Brian Walbey: It is a lovely place Elizabeth, my supermodel comes in very handy when people are needed in my shots.
