Somerleyton Gardens 5/5

Last week I showed the church at the Somerleyton estate in Suffolk and this week you've had a brief look round the extensive gardens surrounding the hall.

The gardens have a fine selection of statues, sculptures, shrubs, trees, footpaths and a maze.

Here are just a few of those all together to give you a quick idea of what Somerleyton gardens are like.  Very well worth a visit if you are ever in or near Suffolk.

Excellent work, Brian.

What is old whatshisname pointing at?
Brian Walbey: Thanks Ray. Old whatshisname is Mercury and is usually depicted pointing up like that.
I hope the third from the left isn't being rude Brian
Brian Walbey: Just Mercury having a funny five minutes Bill.
There appears to be a wealth of interesting features ion these fine gardens Brian.
Brian Walbey: There are Chad including a proper maze built from hedging.

Were you the only ones there Brian? Love the statuary
Brian Walbey: We were fortunate that there was only a few people there Chris so i was able to photogrpah quite easily apart from the archway i showed on Monday when people kept walking through.
If I,m ever in Suffolk I will be sure to pay this Place a visit, You capture the atmosphere of the gardens so well Brian. Especially like the bottom left. smile
Brian Walbey: Thanks Tim. It is a lovely place to go, we have yet to go in the house though.

Lovely sculptures and places in this wonderful garden of Mediterranean flair - and a bench to take a pause from looking and walking around! The one statue is a copy of Giambologna's Mercury! What Billy is thinking of again?
Brian Walbey: Yes I Googled and found out it is Mercury Philine, thanks for confirming it.

http://www.bluffton.edu/~sullivanm/bargello/mercury.html - one of favourite sculptures I know from my early youth on! My mother sent me a postcard depicting this young god and I pinned it up on the wall of my room, yes, I was a teenie!
Brian Walbey: The original is a very powerful sculpture isn't it.

Brian Walbey: Thanks Tracy.
Brian, this is a great series. Have you thought about offering these to Somerleyton Hall as postcards. (:o)
Brian Walbey: Well to be honest I haven't Rosalyn, there are so many images on SC from everyone that could warrant that honour, thanks for your comment.

A great colletion, Brian. I like the view in the bottom left image.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Alan, that was one of my favourite viewpoints also.
Thanks for this tour or what looks like a very interesting place.
Brian Walbey: A pleasure Sheila, next week you will get a quick look at the house.
They sure have a lot in this Garden, its a real treat smile
Brian Walbey: I could have done another week with pictures of other parts of the garden but it could tend to become a bit samey over more than a week.
