photoblog image Houghton Mill

Houghton Mill

We recently had a few days back in St,Ives, Cambridgeshire, which is where we moved from 20 years ago to Leicestershire, and called in at Houghton Mill on the way there.

This has always been a popular place to visit and is now owned by the National Trust.  Unfortunately the weather was very dull on the day so having taken almost the "classic" view of the mill I have toned it in mono to hide the bare sky.

It is a nice place to visit on a good day and the village is full of old house, some of which are thatched. Details can be found at http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-houghtonmill

What an idyllic view, Brian. I can see why you'd want to go back! Even in mono it has "color."
Brian Walbey: This always was a popular spot for us when we lived there and the children were growing up Ginnie.

I like this, especially the busy foreground of flowering weds and overhanging tree. Works well in B&W, Brian.
Brian Walbey: Thanks very much Ray.
Goodness Houghton Mill. I used to stay in this place when it was owned by the YHA back in the very early 60's. In fact our local YHA group spent a working weekend giving the upper floors a thorough spring cleaning. A great place and a lovely image Brian. richard
Brian Walbey: Small world isn't it Richard, it's nice to have revived a memory for you. On the right you will see a recently built tearoom but fortunately is is done in keeping with the mill.
One to add to the list to visit I think Brian
Brian Walbey: Well worth a visit Bill but a bit of a long stretch from you.
It's a pity that Cambridgeshire is not easy to get to from here as it looks a delight. I like the composition.
Brian Walbey: It is nice Alan, especially on a sunny day, which this wasn't. I agree, Southampton to here is a bit of a tangled route.
A wonderful capture Brian. I like the natural framing!
Brian Walbey: Thanks very much Richard.
Even without the colour its still a beautiful view
Brian Walbey: Thanks very much Martin.

Lovely composition, l just wonder what it looks like in colour
Brian Walbey: On a nice day it is lovely in colour Tony, on this day flat as a pancake, hence the toning.

Wow! super shot in lots of ways, composition is a delight. But i think no matter how poor the sky was you should have posted it colour because of all the beautiful subjects in the capture.Nice work Brian.
Brian Walbey: You are proably right Graham, really I was dissapointed at the weather that day and made the best of a bad job. (By the way, you might find tomorrows picture to your liking.)
I love the tones and contrasts in this BW image. Excellent capture and processing. The BW really works well with the details in this shot.
Brian Walbey: Thanks very much John.
Looks a very pleasant and tranquil spot Brian. Nicely composed.
Brian Walbey: It is a lovely spot Janet especially when the weather is nice.

Back to Perth tomorrow.
I'll be working on some perth Centric images after I complete my Kruger ones....

Cheers
Rob
Brian Walbey: Thanks very much Rob.
Lovely place
Brian Walbey: Yes it is lovely in good weather Albert if somewhat crowded.
Pretty in b&w, but must be stunning in colour. On the right day!
Brian Walbey: It is a lovely place, sunny or not Sheila, but the photo from that day was really as dull as the day hence the toning.
Idyllic!
Brian Walbey: Thanks Pamela, idyllic yeas but not on a miserable day like the one we had.
