photoblog image Hill to Calvary

Hill to Calvary

Today is probably the most important day of the Christian calendar throughout the world, and indeed if it were not for this festival of Good Friday we would not be having the Bank Holiday we all share.

I have featured this Calvary at Mount St.Bernards Abbey, near Loughborough, on two previous occasions, first on 5th.January last year, http://brianaw.shutterchance.com/photoblog/Calvary_/ and again on Good Friday last year, http://brianaw.shutterchance.com/photoblog/Were_You_There%A3%21%3Bquestion%A3%21%3B_/  .

This time I am presenting the scene without any twiddling so that the full grandeur of it can be appreciated, standing as it does on a rocky outcrop within the grounds of the monastery.

Of the three, Brian, I like this one the best. It's as though this is THE place where it happened....just like I would have imagined it. Born to die in order to live forever!
Brian Walbey: They have really taken advantage of a natural granite outcrop to build this Calvary Ginnie, the whole Abbey and its gardens are lovely, a place of peace and solitude just five minutes from us.

I didn't know about this place Brian
Brian Walbey: Only five minutes from us Chris, and the grounds are a source of peace and quiet for all, including those who have no Christian leanings at all.

Very appropriate for today. I like how it sits above the rocks.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Aussie, they used a natural outcrop of granite to build this on the top.

This looks very impressive. It's more the sort of thing you are likely to come across abroad rather than in England - we don't normally do this kind of thing!
Ingrid
Brian Walbey: This is a natural outcrop of granite in the grounds of the Abbey Ingrid and they have used it to advantage when they built this.

I've seen your other pictures of this Brian, they're all spectacular. It's nice to see the "whole picture" as it were.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Ellie, my other picture of the calvary silhouette is being used at our church for the Easter posters and all the hymns are being projected on to the screen using that picture as the background, I'm quite pleased.
Very topical Brian. happy Easter.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Chad, a happy Easter yourself. Hope you and Chris had a good day in London yesterday.
The right picture on the right day..Thanks Brian
Brian Walbey: Thanks Ron.
This one is definitly the best Brian with this magical perspective!
Brian Walbey: Thanks Richard, I will have to find something else for Good Friday next year.
This is very impressive Brian
Brian Walbey: Thanks Bill, a nice quiet place to spend some time not very far from us.

This is a beautiful picture, that blue sky is amazing.
Please have a great Easter and please give my regards to Maureen too.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Astrid, I was lucky with the sky, this is a beautiful place altogether. Have a good Easter yourself, I got your other email, thanks for that.
A fitting image for Easter Brian smile
