MONOCHROME MANIA - PART 2 #9

Mind That FInger!

I must have taken this at one of those traction engine rallies I presume and it is interesting to see these old machines being used for what they were originally intended.

If you are interested in Traction Engines there is a very good point of reference here http://steam-up.co.uk/burrell/burrell.htm where this particular engine is probably pictured.

(All of the pictures in this series were taken on B&W.film, developed and printed by me, and sometimes entered into Club competitions.  This is original monochrome work and the only digital bit is scanning the prints into Photoshop and preparing them for display here.)

Its a fine picture, Brian, and shows of the working aspect of traction engines well.

When I was a kid, in Australia, there were still quite a few of these working driving saw mills, water pumps , lathes, etc, and it was a memorable experience to be near one when it was under load.
Brian Walbey: They are certainly very impressive when you see them doing what they were built for. Thanks for your comment Ray.

looks to be beautifully restored
Brian Walbey: I think some of these enthusiasts spend lots of time and money on these things Zed.
A great shot of a actually working steam sawmill. Would H&S allow that in 2009?
Brian Walbey: H & S certainly wouldn't allow this to be general practice Chris, one day, no doubt, they will also outlaw demonstrations as well.
Priceless capture Brian. We used to have them in Madagascar when I was a kid!
Brian Walbey: I can remember seeing these when I was a child and also steam rollers, do you remember them Richard.
... and all that sawdudt will have ended up on the butchers shop floor... (remember those day?) nice one Brian. richard
Brian Walbey: I used to do a butchers bike round when I was a kid and he had sawdust all over the floor to soak up the blood. Urghhh.

Great image
Brian Walbey: Thanks for your comment vintage.
Very interesting..great to see these old steam engines still working.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Ron, we get several traction engine rallies round my part of the U.K.each summer, nice to see them still in action.
Great to see. I bet it is still going strong
Brian Walbey: Thanks Bill, I agree, someone will have kept this old machine in tip top condition no doubt.
You have captured the feeling of the past very nicely Brian
Brian Walbey: Thanks for your comment Janet.

There's a steam rally on the outskirts of Southampton every year, never yet managed to get there but I ought to. These are magnificent machines.
Brian Walbey: I think you would find plenty of opportunity for photos at one of these rallies Ellie although they are probably more of a mans thing. There is also the great Dorset Steam Fair every August at Blandford which is not that far from you I think.
