photoblog image On Shed

On Shed

While I visited the Great Central Railway at Loughborough to see Torndao (featured yesterday) I took a few other pictures as well.

This is the first of a short series of four and these two locos.were standing just outside the locoshed. The nearest one is Stanier "Jubilee" 4-6-0 Leander and the one at the back is Maunsell "LN" 4-6-0 Lord Nelson.

Both locomotives, along with Oliver Cromwell, Tornado and others performed very well over the weekend I understand and it is believed about 7,000 people attended the gala.

I well remember the Jubilees at Bristol in my youth. The Nelsons eluded me until I saw this one on the West Somerset earlier this year
Brian Walbey: Coming from the old LNER area as a lad I wasn't familiar with Jubilees but I did see the Nelsons when my parents took me on holiday down to Dorset and that way every year.
Never saw either in my youth at St David's station in Exeter. Excellent b&w Brian

Very impressive engines Briansmile
Brian Walbey: Thanks Tracy, it is nice to go down to the GCR, 5 miles from me, on non-working days and then you can get this close without any problems.

Thank you for posting this, reminds me of hours spent with my Ian Allan book collecting all the engine numbers and names, nice capture Brian.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Graham, sad to say I have still got my Ian Allen upstairs, the combined edition from 1957/8 and the Locoshed book as well.
The mono treatment imparts a lovely air of nostalgia to the photo Brian, nicely done mate.

Best wishes,
Neil.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Neil, I hoped this would look a bit on the old side.

Brian, you've triggered so many childhood memories of happy moments chasing steam trains and revelling as they passed by under bridges. I just adore the things, from an age when there seemed to be a more romantic feel to moving around the countryside.

Superb in mono
Brian Walbey: Thanks Paul, by doing it in mono, even though the locos colours are quite nice, I hoped it would give it an aged feel.

Great B&W, it makes them even more stronger, love this image.
Nice job
Astrid.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Astrid, I'm surprised how many you ladies on SC enjoy the pictures of trains we men put on here.

B&W really suits these fine machines; a great testament to the enthusuasts who keep them running.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Alan, I hoped the B&W finish would be popular and it seems it is.

There's a wonderful feeling of age, beauty and strength in this picture.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Ellie, these two were certainly very powerful engines in their time.

Good Good!!
Brian Walbey: Thanks very much for your comment Kavita.
Nice one Brian, I believe Leander will be back up at the ELR this weekend for the steam Gala.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Les, Leander is still at the GCR this weekend. City of Truro arrived midweek and they are having an impromptu gala with those two and Lord Nelson I understand.
