Wales has a lot of narrow gauge railways throughout the country but one that gets very little mention is the Bala Lake Railway near the town and lake of the same name.
Built on the trackbed of the old Ruabon to Barmouth standard gauge railway it runs between Llanuwchllyn and what was Pen-y-Bont Halt near Bala.
The locomotive shown here is called Holy War and was built in 1902 when she was supplied to the Dinorwic slate quarry where she remained until 1967. Following that she went to several homes before finding her way to the Bala Lake Railway.
The coaches shown here were made by a local firm in Bala specifically for the railway.
This is a very pleasant ride along the banks of the lake and more information can be found at http://www.bala-lake-railway.co.uk/ (As usual, of course, it rained whilst we were there!)
