My last but one collage of Saint Giles Roman Catholic Church at Cheadle looks back down the church with our backs to the High Altar. The small altar we saw yesterday is in the foreground and to one side is the archway through to the Lady Chapel (left). The other picture (right) shows the ornate wall with the door leading through to the Sacristy. If you look carefully you can just see (supermodel) Maureen through one of the arches in the Rood Screen standing at the back of the Church.

Moving in to the Sepulchre (Chancel) of Saint Giles Roman Catholic Church in Cheadle we see the two altars within. The smaller white one was moved from St.Wilfred's, Cotton in 1990 and is richly decorated. The High Altar beyond is made of alabaster and was carved by Thomas Roddis, and is again richly ornate in design and handiwork.

Now some detail about Saint Giles Roman Catholic Church in Cheadle that I am featuring this week. The 16th.Earl of Shrewsbury, John Talbot commissioned Augustus Pugin to design and build the Church and placed unlimited funds at his disposal for this task. The Church was opened and consecrated on 31st.August, 1846. This collage features the Rood Screen which is richly carved from oak and also gives a peek through to the Sepulchre (Chancel) behind. We shall see more of this later on in the week.

So here we go with this weeks theme which will include 16 photographs, in 5 collages, of the Catholic Church of Saint Giles in Cheadle, Staffordshire. I had read about this church, and its particularly ornate decoration, and as we passed through the town a couple of weeks ago we stopped to have a look. There is a little box at the back in which you can deposit a £1 coin and all the lights come on for 20 minutes. I took 36 shots in that time without starting to get down to photographing the finer detail, all hand held and using only the flash on the camera. We will move from the rear of the church to the High Altar during the week.

The final picture from Froghall on the Churnet Valley Railway shows one of the volunteers having a good old go with some sort of grinder/cutter. The sparks dictate the colour presentation for this. Further information about the railway can be obtained from http://www.churnet-valley-railway.co.uk/ Next week will be the third running I have featured a theme. It may not appeal to all, suffice it to say I will be presenting a series of photos of a magnificently ornate church in the English Midlands. Keep looking, and have a good weekend.

Number 3 in this series taken at Froghall station on the Churnet Valley Railway shows some passengers and staff "chewing the fat" before the train leaves a bit later on. Again I felt mono was suitable for this one.

This is the second of my candid style pictures taken at the Churnet Valley Railway and shows one of the volunteers painting new lamp frames to be erected on the opposite platform. The dayglo jacket almost dictates the use of colour for this one.

Having said I would try a bit of candid work this is the first of four I took at our visit to the Churnet Valley Railway on 20th.April a very dull and dismal day. I liked the way these four men were talking about who knows what before it was time for the train to leave.

Moving away from my seaside pictures of last week I am returning, for today, to the Great Central Railway at Loughborough. All of these places have lots of "stuff" laying about the place and I particularly liked the shapes of the centre of this locomotive driving wheel. The hint of red in the nuts at the back provide a pleasant contrast to the black of the wheel. For the rest of the week we will see my "attempts" at candid style work.

The last in my weeks theme of "The Coast" is a sunset taken at Sidmouth, Devon, once again like the Teignmouth one on Monday in December, 2004. It wasn't until later on that I realised I had got a silhouette of someone in the foreground to give the picture a bit of a base. I hope you have enjoyed these photos, next week will see another theme from Tuesday to Friday. Enjoy the bank Holiday if you are in the U.K.

Taken at Lynmouth in Devon last June, this Herring Gull (Larus Argentatus) was sitting quite comfortably on a wall and didn't flinch when I poked a lens at him/her for this shot. These are one of the more common types of gulls found round our coasts and tend to be scavengers wherever they are situated. (I managed a Highly Commended with my 4th.March "Cor, look at that dad" at my club on Tuesday evening, quite pleased about that.)

Another of my pictures from my visit to Ilfracombe in 2004, and from which I have already posted two collages. I liked the "pointy" shape of the rocks and to put the icing on the cake a ship came along at just the right time to be seen on the horizon. (Honestly, I didn't put the ship in afterwards!)
