Isle of Man Tourist Trophy Races, 1970 2/5

It is the Tourist Trophy Motorcycle races, which first started in 1907, in the Isle of Man this week so a few pictures until Friday from when I went to the races in 1970. These are scans from 48 year old colour slides, mostly converted to B.& W.as the slide quality of some has started to fall, and taken with the simple camera shown below.

Agostini - 350cc. Junior TT race - 1st. position

Boddice - 750cc. Sidecar TT race - Retired

These images were all taken with the camera detailed below:

These bikes look so small now....
Brian Walbey: Yes they do Frank, and they are certainly a lot smaller.
Nice shots - I hope you sold some of these!
Brian Walbey: I never even thought about that Elizabeth, I was actually talking to somebody still heavily involved in the sport the other day about all my photos from the 60's, 70's and 80's because I guess when I pass on they will just be dumped when my kids sort things out, realistically they are not good enough for publication and will be of little interest to younger generations.

A blur of speed
Brian Walbey: Compared with the speeds in the Isle of Man nowadays, 200mph.+ by the biggest bikes, these oldies from the 70's.are comparatively slow at about 130 mph.

We have learnt to read blurring as an indicator of speed.
Brian Walbey: The ideal is to get the machine, car or bike, fairly sharp but the wheels blurred as they rotate, and of course the background slightly blurred.
Eih, these sonic photos of my time.
Brian Walbey: I was an enthusiast and heavily involved with motorcycle racing through the 60's, 70's and early 80's.and have a large library of slides and negatives.
Bike racing from another era, Brian. Nice that you still have them in your library.
Brian Walbey: THe modern bikes are so much more powerful than they were back when my photos were taken, these days most of my watching is on the TV.but the spectacle hasn't changed whatever the speed.

Another two great pictures - I certainly wouldn't want to be in (on?)that sidecar
Brian Walbey: No way would I ever have gone in one of those, I rode in one a couple of times on the road as a passenger and it is a very strange experience till one gets used to it.
Agostini...now that's a name I remember
Brian Walbey: 'Ago' will be 76 on the 16th.June and is still as handsome as he was back in 1970! He still goes to classic bike events all over Europe, and sometime further afield, and rides his old racing bikes, or indeed other makes, in parades including the IOM from time to time.

Such different equipment from today's races. Different cameras, too; I think that the Halina was well respected in its day.
Brian Walbey: The Halinas were very popular, my friend had the same model except it had an exposure meter built in above the lens. Modern racing sidecar outfits look very different to the one here.
Fine action shots, Brian.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Tom.
