Thoresby Hall 1/7

Nearly a year ago I treated us to a break at Thoresby Hall near Nottingham to celebrate Maureens 70th.birthday. This time, during our visit we found time to walk in the grounds and at the same time relax in the house so this week is outside and next week is inside. Robert Pierrepont, 1st Earl of Kingston-upon-Hull acquired the Thoresby lands in 1633, but was killed in the English Civil War in 1643. His son Henry Pierrepont, the 2nd Earl, built the first grand house, a Jacobean mansion attributed to the architect Talman, around 1670. This was burnt down and a second house, designed by Carr of York, was built. This house was demolished to make way for Anthony Salvin’s Thoresby Hall, built by the 3rd Earl Manvers in 1860.

This is a Wow sort of an opening shot, Brian.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Ray, it is that sort of place.
The place looks massive! Nice angle!
Brian Walbey: It is a large house and round the other side are new wings added on for additional bedrooms and the nightclub etc., plus there are two restaurants in the basement area.
Magnifique, j'aime aussi le jardin.
Brian Walbey: There are also hectares for parkland which I will show during the week also.

Re-built in the original (?) Jacobean style, Brian?
Brian Walbey: It might well have been Lisl.

What a splendid looking place!
Brian Walbey: All the Warner premier hotels are places like this but this one is the flagship one and of course the expensive, but what the heck, at our age why not spend and enjoy ourselves from time to time.
So more modern than it looks Brian.

To the tune of Little boxes on the hillside:

"Little towers of imagination
Little towers on the rooftop ..."

Anyhow, it must have been quite a time, staying like an earl smile

What a mansion! It would be quite a place to stay!

It is very grand. The roof line especially is so OOT (well, literally as well!)
