Stapleford Park Country Fair 5/7

Besides the miniature railway at Stapleford Park there was an extensive country fair so a few shots from that this week. This Albion travelling hardware shop takes me back to my childhood when a similar vehicle used to come round where I lived on Saturday mornings selling groceries, fruit and vegetables and, importantly for the time, Paraffin for the heaters in the rooms of the house without any built in heating. (I’m talking 40’s and early 50’s.)

Oh, paraffin heaters...They stunk! Not all good in the old days Brian. A very smart truck.
Brian Walbey: Yes the truck has really been done up very well. Not only did we have a Parrafin stove to heat one of our rooms but the radio worked off Accumulators which had to be charged every week, do you remember those I wonder?
What a great thing! We have the "Snap-On" tool trucks
Brian Walbey: This really bought back memories as my narative says.

This is a brilliant reminder of how things used to be many years ago. I remember similar vehicles in my childhood too
Brian Walbey: We also had a fish and chip van on a Saturday evening and an ice cream van in the afternoons.

Somehow, most of the world seemed to lose travelling shops in the 1970's. In Dutchland you had the dairyman, the baker, the fishman and some others. Over here, it was the veggieman, ice cream man.

I believe the significance of the 1970's, was when the OPEC's got together and increased petrol price. Travelling door-to-door lost its profitability.
Brian Walbey: I think vans like this died out in the early 60's where I lived. We still ahd the ice cream van most days and the fish and chip van on saturday evenings.
A fine vehicle - and fine memories, Brian. We just had coal fires smile
Brian Walbey: We had a range in the kitchen and a coal fire in the 'front room' which was only lit on Sundays, hence the Parafin stove for weekdays.
I just love how these vehicles are repurposed like this, Brian.
Brian Walbey: As soon as I saw this it took me back to my days as a boy and the man who came round with his van selling all sorts, includim=ng sweets smile

I bet if you wanted just six screws you could buy those, too. It looks like it has had a repaint since being seen at a 1992 rally - https://www.flickr.com/photos/7240226@N02/34142347692
Brian Walbey: Well done for finding the earlier photo, same people, new paint job.
What a wonderful vehicle Brian.

I remember having a paraffin heater on the landing...to heat the entire upstairs!
Brian Walbey: Great isn't it. We had oen in the 'front room' for Monday to Saturday, on Sundays the fire was lit, how times change.
