Winter Special

Back in September last year a steam hauled excursion train ran through Loughborough on its way to York. We don’t get many steam hauled trains on our part of the national network so I went to my favourite spot a mile or two out of town to catch ex LNER Class A4 4-6-2 ‘Pacific’ No. 60009 Union of South Africa as it headed north on the outward journey. To those enthusiasts among you this will look strange but on the Midland mainline the tracks on the right are the Up and Down fast and those on the left the Up and Down slow, it took me a while to get my head round it when we first moved up this way.

Very nice too Brian. By odd co-incidence she came through Bathampton yesterday evening, working from Minehead to London. I just had to go to pay my respects
Brian Walbey: How could you have possibly avoided paying homage Chris.

How sensible - the lines, I mean
Brian Walbey: It seems strange travelling on that line with other trains passing on the 'wrong' side!
I never knew that about the lines!

A fine shot of a grand locomotive
Brian Walbey: Thanks Bill. 60009 passed through Bathampton yesterday on a special so Chris went to pay his respect as it passed.
You certainly know the best spot for such a shot.
Brian Walbey: Ye is is quite a good spot, although for several miles the track is in a cutting like this so it is difficult to get a ground level shot.
Nicely done image with this above POV.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Mary, it is proably the best viewpoint near where I live.

"Union of South Africa" is a regular visitor down here in the south on summer specials heading to Weymouth. It's good to see it here without the usual overhead electric lines.
Brian Walbey: This is probably the best viewpoint near us, although for several miles the track is in a cutting like this so it is difficult to get a ground level shot. 60009 passed through Bathampton yesterday on a special so Chris went to pay his respect as it passed.
an interesting history of the locomotive and a superb b&w image of the full train Brian....petersmile
Brian Walbey: Thanks Peter.
A great class of engine.
Brian Walbey: Indeed they were Tom, growing up near the East Coast Main Line I actually saw every single one of these A4 Pacifics in use.
I thought all the main lines were electrified now Brian ? I never saw a lot of these A4's , we called them 'Streaks'. You got a good shot of this.
Brian Walbey: Growing up near the East Coast Main Line I actually saw every single one of these A4 Pacifics in use. A few years ago the government declared plans to electrify Midland Main Line right through to Sheffield and to date Network Rail has spent millions of pounds in preparatory work on bridges, platforms and other works. Suddenly the government has changed its mind and it will not now take place so in reality things will stay much as they are at the moment being, I think, the only un-electrified line out of London. Mind you there's plenty of money for this HS2 nonsense and billions for us to give other countries who seem to have more money than we have anyway! Rant over, why don't they listen to the voters for a change.
