photoblog image Kimmeridge Bay 2/5

Kimmeridge Bay 2/5

Kimmeridge gives its name to the Kimmeridgian, the division of the Jurassic period in which the beds were laid down, and because of the quality of the cliffs and the fossils they yield. Kimmeridge is also the type locality for the Jurassic age Kimmeridge Clay formation, and these two shots are just of one small area where visitors gather to try and find fossils in those layers of rock and shale.

Fortunately another birthday comes round today but my treat this year is on Thursday when we go to Kilworth House Theatre and spoil ourselves with the overnight theatre break to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, one of my favourite shows, and which I would loved to have been in back when I was doing that sort of thing.

This reminds me of the layers of rock we see in places here, some of those give up fossils of all kinds.
Brian Walbey: This is supposed to be a really good place for fossils, to be honest we didn't bother to look.

since childhood I am intrigued by these layers. My mom told me to compare it with the rings in a tree... year after year it will "grow". Great pictures here, Brian.
Happy birthday, have a great day celebrating together with Maureen and family.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Astrid. Your Mum was probably right, when we look at Elizabeth and Franks picrues of the Canyon it is all sorts of different layers from top to bottom.

Have a happy birthday Brian. I like this geological shot
Brian Walbey: Thanks Chris, I think a lot of people go there to chip away at the shale cliffs.

I have not seen that show but enjoy the music Brian. Happy Birthday. It is hard to imagine the the layers in your photograph are not man made.
Brian Walbey: Nature does all sorts of things Chad without the hand of man.

This shows the strata so well, Brian. Have a lovely Birthday treat
Brian Walbey: Thanks Lisl.
I would stay here as long as possible. Happy Birthday, Brian. It is not too painful becoming an old fossil. smile Have fun!
Brian Walbey: With your interest in the geology of the coast near you I think you would find this very interesting. I try to think of myself as not an old fossil but once one gets a 7 in front of the age number it feels a lot different than those years when it was still a 6, nothing one can do to stop it of course.
Nice work again. I'd love to mess around in those fossil bearing lodes.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Rob. You and thousands of others smile
I have never seen such distinct layers, a treasure trove for geologists and whatever fossil hunters are specifically called.
Brian Walbey: There were quite a lot of famileis there with the children seeing if they could find a fossil.

My best wishes to your birthday, Brian! I remember that you have been in this theatre in former years, too. Chad is right, "It is hard to imagine the the layers in your photograph are not man made."
Brian Walbey: Thanks Philine, we had a very nice day, I can't wait to see Joseph on Thursday evening, I know all the songs by heart and will feel like singing along. Mother Nature done a very strange job when she laid these layers of stone down.
two great images put together perfectly in this montage Brian....petersmile
Brian Walbey: Thanks Peter.
HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Brian. You can always say you're older than I am, but not by much. smile
Brian Walbey: Thanks Ginnie, we had a nice day and a 'large' meal out!
Fascinating strata!
Brian Walbey: You can see why it is a popular place for families, the kids there were chipping away trying to find something.
Happy Birthday, Brian.
Brian Walbey: Thanks very much Graeme, I have reached that age when every new year is somewhat of a bonus smile

They are very stroking images which show the geology of the area very well. It never ceases to amaze me that fossils are still be found millions of years later.

Happy Birthday! You certainly know how to celebrate in style. I can't even recall what I did for my birthday.
Brian Walbey: Thanks and thanks Alan, we had a nice day yesterday. In reality I guess the world has fossil beds all over the place.
Oh I missed your birthday!! So sorry - I usually try to keep up on these things!
I hope you had a really wonderful day, but it sounds like Thursday will be the celebration!
PS - I like the geology lesson on your post today!
Brian Walbey: Thanks Elizabeth, we had a nice day with a rather large meal out yesterday evening. I'm looking forward to seeing Joseph again on Thursday evening, it is an open air theatre with a great atmosphere. Trouble is although I never actually got to be in that show myself I know all the songs and will feel like singing along, no doubt Maureen will keep me in check smile
