On Shed

The second of two shots taken a few days after the Winter Gala at the Great Central Railway, Loughborough in January. One of the guest locomotives for the gala was this Ex LMS Hughes ‘Crab’ 2-6-0 No.13065 (42765).

Ah, I remember 'Crabs', what a nice paint job.
Brian Walbey: Another type I didn't see very often. I guess the piant job is the pre nationalisation livery.
I think the dark red is nice!
Brian Walbey: It looked very smart all clean and polished up.
Quelle magnifique locomotive !
Brian Walbey: Indeed it is Martine.

Just occasionally in the old days we'd get a Crab at Bristol or maybe at Bath Green Park. The power to weight ratio must have been quite high on these, given the size of the boiler
Brian Walbey: I'm not sure if there are any other examples of these left, according to my ABC of 1958 the Tractive Effort of these was 26,580 lbs., as an ex footplate man you would probably understand that more than me.

I do like the colour of the LMS locomotives. I don't recall seeing any of these before.

I wonder if it ever looked this splendid in its working days?
Brian Walbey: Like all the locos at the GCR they are kept clean and shiny when not in use, which is more than can be said about BR in the mid-60's!
Yes, the paint colour is eye catching, Brian. Reminds me of Royalty.
Brian Walbey: They are fine looking engines, and it certainly is a royal type of colour.
A handsome livery!
Brian Walbey: Lovely isn't it, a pre-nationalisation livery I would think.
