Grasmere Church 1/5

The Church is named after St Oswald, a 7th. Century Christian King of Northumberland, who is said to have preached on this site. It is the parish church of Grasmere, Rydal and Langdale, and each township has its own separate gate into the churchyard. This was the only decent picture available from the outside as extensive works are ongoing and all but this East end is clad in scaffolding and fencing.

A very simple church from the outside, I know that does not mean it is wonderful on the inside. I really like this picture, Brian.
Brian Walbey: Thanks Astrid. It is rather a nice litle church inside.
I have been there - and I love how simple it is.
Brian Walbey: I guessed you might have been Elizabeth, it is nice to think that my Lake District pictures are taking you back up memory lane when you live so far away.

Presumably the gates are in line with the paths the parishioners took all those years ago when they walked to church
Brian Walbey: I think they are Lisl whne I think back to oru visit.

It seems broader than it is tall
Brian Walbey: It is fairly wide when one gets inside.
The dreaded scaffolding is a pain!
Brian Walbey: It completely stopped any shots from the west end of the church, this was the only angle available, at least the inside was reasonably o.k.for pictures.

You did well to present it as if no work was been done to it.
Brian Walbey: This was the only angle available, at least the inside was reasonably o.k.for pictures.

I have been there, too, in memory of the Wordsworth family.
Brian Walbey: Then no doubt you saw the Wordsworths graves in the churchyard which will be my Friday picture.

It is not a a particularly attractive church from the outside. It is at the end of the Coffin route where the dead were taking from Rydal to the graveyard here for burial.
Brian Walbey: That's an interesting crumb of information Alan. It is quite a simple, but nice, church inside.
