I love that big, bold, brass lectern, Brian...I can picture a big, brawny Vicar grasping a wing in each hand and letting go with a powerful gushing of Fire and Brimstone...
Brian Walbey: I'm not sure about the fire and brimstone bit Ray but the guy we had on Sunday morning was both interesting without being too serious and highly entertaining, I could imagine him doing stand up comedy.
Very nice, Brian!
Brian Walbey: It has been modernised quite a bit inside.

The eagle ‘lectern’ is so often seen in Anglican churches Brian.
Brian Walbey: I guess the Eagle must have a meaning.

The carved figures are interesting
Brian Walbey: You will get a closer look at them later in the week.
I am not sure the modern stage in the foreground quite works Brian
Brian Walbey: It seems to be the thing in Anglican churches these days to bring a second altar and associated bits out of the chancel into the body of the church, I must admit in big churches the Vicar would be a long way from the congregation if he done Communion etc.from the main altar at the east end.

I agree with Bill, I'm not sure I like this huge structure in front of the chancel, but as you say, it is to bring dwindling congregations nearer to the vicar.
Brian Walbey: It seems to be the vogue in a lot of churches these days, I went back to the church I was brought up in as a chorister during the 40's.and 50's. a few years ago and the same has been done there, it just didn't feel right that the chancel was nearly empty, apart from the choir stalls.

I must confess to not having heard of some of the saints that you mention. My eye keeps being drawn to the white cloth.
Brian Walbey: I've not heard of many of them Alan.

a fine choir . I know only five saints of the 14 Northern saints, I know only the 14 Holy Helpers.
Brian Walbey: I've not heard of many of them to be honest.

"The symbolism of the eagle derived from the belief that the bird was capable of staring into the sun and that Christians similarly were able to gaze unflinchingly at the revelation of the divine word.[1] Alternatively, the eagle was believed to be the bird that flew highest in the sky and was therefore closest to heaven, and symbolised the carrying of the word of God to the four corners of the world."
We have also often the eagle lectern in our churches, hinting to Evangelist John "In the beginning was the word ...".
Brian Walbey: Thanks for this Philine, both your reasons are interesting.
i like the pipes in the choir and the lectern of the eagle Brian... a fine composition....petersmile
Brian Walbey: Thanks Peter.

The Saints' names are interesting - I haven't heard of Aiden, Paulinus and Finan
Brian Walbey: I hadn't heard of a lot of them either.
