Ambleside Church 1/7

St Mary's Church is in Ambleside, Cumbria. It was built in the 1850’s to a design by George Gilbert Scott in Gothic Revival style. The building is Grade II* listed. Notable features include its stone spire, which is a local landmark and an unusual feature in Lake District churches. The building is constructed of slate, the typical building stone of the locality, and sandstone which is used for dressings and the spire.

One of the most attractive towers I have ever seen, Brian.
Brian Walbey: It is quite unusual with all those bits built on to the sloping part of the steeple.
Well that's certainly familiar to me! Lovely shot, Brian!
Brian Walbey: I had a feeling you walould say something like that. This is the start of a selection of my photos from last years Lake District holiday and will run for a few weeks now, so I'd bet there will be a few more places you are familiar with.

Superbe église.
Brian Walbey: It is a fine looking church but in a difficukt place to photograph in all those trees.
It is, indeed, a most unusual spire, Brian. I find myself staring at it...to see if it's a "mistake?"
Brian Walbey: I've not seen one with all those 'bits' built on it before.

A really solid piece of Victorian architecture isn't it
Brian Walbey: Very much so Chris.

It has pleasing proportions Brian.
Brian Walbey: Trouble is being in those trees this is about the only angle one can get to see much of it for photos.
He got about a bit did old Gilbert. It looks a fine building Brian
Brian Walbey: The more church details I look at for my postings the more churches I find had Gilbert doing the designs for the renovations.
Rather ugly to my eye, Brian.
Brian Walbey: I know what you mean Tom, I have seen better, but it is a Victorian design.

Sort of an upward surge from the gravestones to the spire.
Brian Walbey: I suppose it does come to think of it.

A lovely looking building, and well cared for it would seem.
Brian Walbey: It was neat and tidy both outside and inside.

This is a wonderful tower and so different from what I am used to see in England.
The gravestones in the front add to the picture.
Brian Walbey: I've not seen a tower quite like this before, but there are so many trees round the church this is the only unobstructed view.

I'm always impressed by this church. Despite passing it and even photographing many times, I've never been inside - no idea why! Gilbert Scott was a prolific designer.
Brian Walbey: The more church details I look at for my postings the more churches I find had Gilbert doing the designs for the renovations.
The scheme of different colours would have made it beautiful when new.
Brian Walbey: It looks good with different types of coloured stone.
Remarkable the bell tower of the church, never seen anything like it
Brian Walbey: I've not come across one like that either.
