Church Wilne 4/5

This is the church of St Chad at Church Wilne. The lower part of the tower is 13th century. The battlements are 15th century. The church was accurately restored by Currey & Thompson after being gutted by fire in 1917. The Willoughby Chapel on the south side was built by Sir Henry in 1622 as a memorial to his father Sir John and his mother Frances.

Superbe petite église.
Brian Walbey: Lovely isn't it.
Some of these look like true fortresses... no exception here!
Brian Walbey: I guess thatw as the style in vogue at the time for new builds of churches.

It is rather pleasant Brian, if rather squat and heavy looking.

There is something about these churches. Love this point of view and the architecture.

Its probably an illusion but the church seems to have quite low roof to the nave. I like the castellations around it.
Brian Walbey: It's not an illusion, that's how it is Alan.

a very stable, robust looking church, reminding me of the Martin Luther hymn "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott"/ A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.
Brian Walbey: The title of that hymn seems very apt indeed for this church Philine.
Nicely sunlit!
Brian Walbey: It was a really pleasant spring afternoon Tom.
