Great Central Railway (North) 1/7

Formerly known as Nottingham Transport Heritage Centre, The Great Central Railway - Nottingham, based at Ruddington, now offers almost 10 miles of heritage railway running through the beautiful scenery of South Nottinghamshire and North-West Leicestershire.

LMS Stanier Class 8F No. 8274 (48274) receives attention in the yard. She was exported as a kit of parts to Turkey in 1940, returned to the UK in 1989 and restored to operational condition.

She is looking good, Brian, and your composition with wheel-sets and wheel-barrows in the foreground is excellent.
Brian Walbey: A couple more shots like this later in the week, they have loads of bits and pieces laying about.
It is amazing that they can disassemble the thing, reassemble it... and it runs!
Brian Walbey: That's the way all these heritage railways keep going Elizabeth once they can get the money together.
Nice shot, Brian, I hadn't heard of that railway.
Brian Walbey: It is only a fairly small place although there is another museum there, more of which I'm showing tomorrow.
Lots to see in this image, Brian. A train lover's delight.
Brian Walbey: Indeed Ginnie, there's locomotives and lots of bits and pieces all over the place.

Fine workhorses those 8Fs,we had them on the S&D in Bath. They were constructed not only at Crewe but Swindon, Eastleigh and all over the place in WW2
Brian Walbey: They have an 8F at Loughborough, a real workhorse.

This shows many hours of TLC here, Brian. I never get tired of pictures of these giants.
Brian Walbey: I think you would like to visit this place Astrid, apart from complete locomotives there are bits and pieces of engines all over the place.

Nobody dares mention steam trains and pollution in the same sentence Brian. Whoops, I just did.
Brian Walbey: Looking back they were of course terrible things for polluting the atmosphere, instead we now get thousands of diesel lorries, buses and trains.
These were fine locomotives and I like your picture here Brian
Brian Walbey: Thanks Bill. They were rea workhorses, they have one at Loughborough that is used quite a bit.

I see they keep wheelbarrows, for in case the loco breaks down and there is urgent freight to shift.
Brian Walbey: Lol Louis, I never thought of that. There is actually all sorts of bits and pieces laying about the place.

Including the man really gives this a sense of scale. Lovely shot.
Brian Walbey: From ground level these really are big things, some of the steam locomotives in your country were even bigger.
